New Coach, New Season Underway for Girl’s Soccer

The boy’s junior varsity manager, Max Woodruff, has taken over the top role for the girls’ program. Soccer has a following in the enclave of Laguna Beach, the high school boasting two populated squads. After the dismissal of the head coach from the girls’ soccer squad, Woodruff switched his role at the school.

“Coach Max is such an uplifting and supportive coach, and he preaches teamwork and comradery better than any coach I have had,” stated sophomore CDM (center defensive mid) Lucy Rowley. “He has created a positive environment where everyone is encouraging and willing to work as a team, and his positive attitude excites everyone to be a part of this team.

Starting the 2023-2024 campaign, the varsity squad secured a 2-0 victory over Sage Hill.

“Winning our first game definitely sets a positive tone for the rest of the season and makes us super excited for our next games,” said the midfielder. “And considering that it was our first game played together, we know that we will only improve from here and get closer as a team which will make us even more successful in the future.”

This seems to be a successful first game and a start to a new spot for Woodruff, as Rowley touched on how Laguna “prioritizes communication over everything… and by doing that, we didn’t allow Sage Hill many opportunities to score.” With a zero on the scoreboard for the visiting team, it shines true that something must have worked for the Breakers, and even though it comes from the players, it does not hurt to have a solid manager leading the pack.

With the girls’ side of the LBHS soccer team having won numerous league championships in the past decade, this 23/24 squad looks to add a year to the storybooks and some glamour to the school’s soccer program. With little funding going to the most popular sport in the world, the girls could secure an upgrade for both the girls and boys to match some of the others, like water polo, volleyball, and football.

The team looks great; the girls can add another banner to Laguna Beach High. Do not count Max and the Breakers out, and tune in for the rest of their season. Go Beach!
