The sun was still high over the Main Beach courts when the final point of the third set ended, securing Laguna Beach’s first CIF semifinal appearance in program history. The team also completed an undefeated league season and recorded its deepest CIF run to date.
Much of the season’s structure was shaped by the senior class, which set expectations for practices and matches. Junior Zoey Bond said the group helped establish consistency across the team.
“I had an amazing time playing with all the seniors,” Bond said. “I loved playing with Ivy — I know she will do great things at Cal Poly SLO.”
Bond said the seniors contributed to a steady environment and demonstrated how practices and matches should be approached.
Junior Maia Miller, in her first year on varsity, said the transition was supported by the seniors’ leadership.
“All the seniors made being on varsity really easy for me,” Miller said. “They were all welcoming and pushed me to do better every day.”
Miller said the team’s undefeated league record reflected a collective effort, with seniors playing a key role in maintaining performance throughout the season.
Junior Bella Norelli competed primarily with senior Kaia Gamber. Over the course of the season, the pair improved their coordination and communication during matches.
“We got a lot better at playing together over time,” Norelli said. “It was just really fun getting to compete with her.”
Norelli said consistent partnership play contributed to their on-court performance.
The team’s progress was also noted by those around the program. Parent Laura Jumani said the CIF semifinal appearance reflected the team’s overall development.
“The team had such a strong season,” Jumani said. “It made it to the CIF semifinals for the first time in our program’s history.”
With several seniors graduating, the team will have a different lineup next season. Returning players said the expectations set this year will continue to guide the program.
Senior Layla Kollock said the team maintained consistency throughout the season, regardless of match outcomes.
“There were ups and downs all season, but everyone’s spirits stayed high and supported each other,” Kollock said. “Whether it was wins or losses, no one failed to keep a smile on their faces.”
Kollock said the team focused on maintaining performance standards and addressing areas for improvement.
The seniors also contributed to team organization and communication, helping guide less experienced players during practices and matches.
“Seeing underclassmen work hard at practice and in games made me reflect on my time,” Kollock said. “I am confident that the LBHS beach volleyball team will go even further.”
Laguna Beach concluded its season with an undefeated league record and a CIF semifinal appearance, marking a new benchmark for the program.
