California is one of the most free and open states in the United States. People are free to have their own opinions, and many movements like Pride thrive in this coastal state. Although it seems so open, California hides dark secrets like the innumerable amount of abusive child marriages. You have to be 18 to get divorced, but there is no age minimum for marriage. In 2021, there were just under 8,000 child marriages solely in the state of California. Some young girls are forced into marriage as young as ten years old.
Any intercourse that happens with a minor (under 18) is statutory rape. This is because minors cannot give consent until they are of age. Sadly, this does not apply in a marriage. It is perfectly legal for an adult to have intercourse with a child if they are married, and since divorce is not legal until 18, the victim cannot escape the marriage. Unfortunately, many abusers take advantage of this and bring young girls into forced marriages. They often pay the child’s family for consent and stop the victim’s education entirely. Sometimes, to prevent the child from fighting back, their mouths are taped shut and their wrists put into hand-cuffs.
Often, these tragic issues happen when the family is in strict evangelical churches and cults. Generally, extreme religious ways force children into these marriages against their will. They are coaxed into thinking that it is their destiny to do it and that they are betraying their church if they don’t follow through with it. Countless young girls are forced into this legal loophole for pedophiles and sexual abusers. This is extremely traumatic for them and has to stop.
The UN has called child marriages “human rights violations.” The United States has gone around accusing numerous other countries of human rights criminals. However, this is terribly hypocritical since over 46 states allow marriage between the ages of 16 and 18 with parental consent in the US, and 15 states allow children under the age of 16 to get married.
Survivors feel not enough is being done about the situation. In fact, a group of them called Unchained have come together in their wedding dresses and veils with tape over their mouths and handcuffs right on the capitol steps. Luckily, they are not the only ones fighting for their cause. Representative Cottie Petrie-Norris representing California has fought hard and long for these girls who did nothing wrong. “I am committed to ending this human rights abuse in California,” states Petrie-Norris. Later this year, a bill to end marriages under the age of eighteen will be proposed to legislation.

That is ridiculous that a child is old is 10 years old can get married but you gotta be 18 to get a divorce. This is ridiculous and disgusting. What is wrong with what passes for people?

Please stop this practice quickly. That is nothing but child rape!

What can we do to help stop this??
Patricia | Mar 1, 2024 at 11:58 am
This is horrible. I can’t even imagine what these poor girls are going through. How can we call it rape and at the same time allow marriage. These are children who are being forced into a life they didn’t ask for. Where are there rights. Who will right for them. We have no right to talk about any other countries when ours is hurting its own children. For those ok with this make your daughters get married. Stop sacrificing our children. And we wonder why our children are so depressed, angry, and suicidal.

I will absolutely sign that bill to try and stop kids from getting married to grown adults that’s beyond horrible.
Anita Chavez | Mar 1, 2024 at 10:45 am
I totally support this bill. I myself was a child bride in 1980 at the age of 15. These acts of in humane behavior need to be stopped and the disgusting pigs taking advantage of children need to be punished.

Who says monsters don’t live among us? I support the stopping of underage marriages.

I had no idea that this was legal! It leaves me sick at heart! How can we have laws against child sex crimes while supporting such a huge “loophole” that protects such hideous crimes? We need to change this law!We MUST do more to protect our children!

Thank you so for this eye opening article!
I had no idea this existed and with heavy heart
Will sign all petitions to help stop this crime against our innocent stop.
I am heartbroken and sick, and left wondering if this is one of the reasons other countries hate us ? To thing Evolution has done nothing for our race. I am ashamed.

I’m so grateful that someone is advocating for these young girls! I hope a permanent end to these atrocities is achieved soon. My Father was a child abuser , my Son, after being abused as a small child, turned abuser himself as a child and continues the atrocities today! It makes me absolutely sick!
All child abuse and spousal abuse has got to be stopped!
Thank You!

If adult “consent” is required for consensual sexual acts, turning only stands to reading that it would require adult “consent” by one entering a marriage contract.
This is just sick and a support to engage in “a legal loop hole” to commit pedophile (illegal) acts.
