This Saturday, September 14th, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Edgar Berlanga will go head-to-head during a brutal match in the boxing ring. Canelo is an esteemed boxer with a fantastic legacy and record of 61-2-2, going up against the best in the sport and winning almost every time. On the other hand, Berlanga has proven his talent with a record of 22-0 with 17 knockouts, but he still has much to learn. Fighting an experienced boxer such as Canelo, Berlanga will surely learn from this fight and improve himself, just as Canelo did when he fought Floyd Mayweather.
The two boxers both have different reasons for fighting each other; Berlanga wants a chance to prove himself to the world by going against a giant in the sport of boxing. On the other hand, Canelo has nothing left to prove to his audience; he has gone up against the greats of boxing and almost always came out on top. For him, this fight is simply to keep fans entertained and give himself a well-deserved rest where he doesn’t have to fight a significantly threatening opponent, even though that has never and still doesn’t scare Canelo.
Both Canelo and Berlanga have made this fight personal, each taking shots at the other and not holding back. When asked how he would handle the fight, Canelo responded, “I’m not going to have compassion for him.” Berlanga reacted similarly, saying, “he’s a guy that’s arrogant, you know, and he’s smiling in my face.” Canelo and Berlanga got into a heated argument at the press conference, ending with Berlanga calling him a “p**a” and Canelo telling him that he was going to give him “la ch**ga de [su] Vida”. Very harsh words from both parties. They both hold no respect for one another, which will undoubtedly fuel the bloodbath on September 14th.
Berlanga is looking to turn this boxing match into a feud between their respective homes, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Canelo, however, does not look at it that way. But Canelo is looking to represent Mexico like always, especially with the celebrations of La Independencia (Mexican Independence Day). As always, Canelo is looking to bring excitement to all his fans.
If the bell sounds this Saturday, the clash will involve much more than just one match of boxing. Instead, it could be a dramatic moment to shape what could be in store for the future. Mixing in Canelo Alvarez’s experience with Edgar Berlanga’s heart will make a great fight. This bout will no doubt be an amazing display of intensity and boxing-with each fighter bringing his set of motivations and pressures to the ring. Be it Berlanga’s ability to shake up Canelo’s career or the reigning champion managing to cement his legacy by capturing yet another victory, this fight is a testament to the drama and excitement of the sport.
