In 2016, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the second-degree murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Gypsy was released on December 28, 2023, after marrying her husband Ryan Anderson. Gypsy Rose convinced her boyfriend at the time, Nicholas Godejohn, to murder her mother, Dee Dee, in 2015. Gypsy felt trapped with her mother, and she felt that running away or telling authorities would not stop her mother from performing the heinous acts upon her. Dee Dee Blanchard convinced everyone around her and Gypsy that her perfectly healthy daughter was sick. Dee Dee faked that her daughter Gypsy had leukemia and muscular dystrophy. Gypsy used a wheelchair even though she could walk perfectly fine. She even lied and convinced health professionals and doctors that Gypsy was genuinely sick. Everyone believed her act, including doctors, family members, friends, and even her daughter Gypsy, whom she was making sick. Due to all the misleading information Dee Dee was putting out to create this image of Gypsy as her ill daughter, nobody knew the truth about Dee Dee and Gypsy.
Gypsy stated in an interview, “Obviously I knew I could walk and didn’t need a feeding tube, but everything else was a big confusion for me.” Gypsy said that when she asked her mom about her not being sick, she would always have an excuse. She would tell Gypsy that she had a seizure the night before and didn’t remember correctly. Gypsy said that she didn’t know how healthy she was until she was arrested. She also said that she felt more free in prison than she did in her life with her mom, which says a lot about the environment she was in. Her friends and family were shocked to see her walking and healthy at her trial. It’s baffling how a mother could do this to her daughter, and no one had a clue what was going on behind the scenes.
In 2012, Gypsy met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating forum. Gypsy met Nicholas without her mother’s knowledge. Nicholas and Gypsy began to have a texting relationship, and in October 2012, they became a couple. They communicated online for two years before they ever met in person. Nick was reported to struggle with mental health issues after doing disturbing acts in public. Nicholas accepted Gypsy the way she was even when she told him about her situation and “conditions.” The two had a very different relationship; Gypsy said she realized he had two personalities. Gypsy would create different personalities to match his. After Gypsy told Nick that she was perfectly healthy and that her mom was making her sick, Nick said that he wanted to do anything to be with her. He stated, “I wanted to make sure her mom wasn’t going to harm her anymore. I made sure of that”. Then, the two came up with the plan to murder her mother in her sleep. The plan was that Nick was going to stab her mother in her sleep. On the night that he did it, Gypsy said she was terrified and almost didn’t go through with it, but she knew it was the only way she could get free. She hid in the bathroom with her hands covering her ears until Nick told her it was okay to come out.
After the murder was completed, they ran away together to Nick’s parent’s house. Eventually, the police tracked down the couple. Nick was sentenced to life in prison in 2019 for first-degree murder. Then Gypsy was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. Gypsy has since been released after serving 85% of her 10-year sentence. She is now married and has claimed she has no more romantic feelings for her ex-boyfriend, Nicholas. She currently resides in Louisiana with her husband, Ryan Scott Anderson. Gypsy is publishing a book named Released that will be published in January 2024. There is also a docu-series coming out about her life and her case. In 2019, the drama series “The Act” was released. The show follows her life and trial. However, the show was not consulted with her, and she says that the show negatively impacted her life in prison. The good news is that she is now happy with her husband and is telling the world what she has been through. In conclusion, she hopes to be the voice for people who cannot speak up for themselves.
