On November 14th, the girls’ JV basketball team had their first game against Godinez at 5 pm. It was a tough game for Laguna, but the team did very well overall. The score ended up being 10-29, a loss for Laguna. As it is unfortunate they ended up losing, there are always more opportunities to win. Our girls’ junior varsity team shot some pretty good baskets that undoubtedly got the crowd cheering. It was an extremely entertaining game to watch without a single dull moment present throughout.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Ava Heacock shortly after the game on Tuesday. Of course, the whole team was a little upset because of the loss, but overall, the team was positive, acknowledging that “moving forward is the only way to go.”
I asked Ava how she felt about her team’s performance tonight at the game, and she felt that a “few players were doing very well and holding our team up.” “… Illiana and Brighten were playing very aggressively and that helped our team greatly.”
I asked Ava what she thinks she and her team could have done better, and she responded by informing us that the team “ could have boxed out more, been more aggressive because that team we were playing was very aggressive and very good defensively. We need to play more aggressively if we’re going to win against our opponents, especially since our opponents are JV teams and we’re not exactly at the level yet. We need to put our all into everything we do.”
“We’ve been working on a lot of footwork and plays.” “We have practice every single day after school from 2:15 to 4:15 – 4:30, depending on the day. We also have weightlifting with Bobby about 2 times a week”. Overall, the team practices, weight lifts, and learns new skills to improve their team performance and beat their opponents. They also run many plays to improve their cardio and skill.
The last question I asked Ava was what her hopes were going into the season. “I hope we can work hard to score and win more games. I am hopeful we can do really well when we put our minds to it,” said Ava. Her hopes for the season are to improve every day and work on new techniques and skills so that way they can win their next games.
Girls JV basketball is a group of ambitious and dedicated girls. They are constantly practicing and improving their skills every day. Even though they didn’t win their first game, it does not suggest that they will lose their future ones. It’s only their first game and only the beginning of their season. There is still much ahead of them and the only way to go now is up. At this rate, they are sure to win against their next opponents, because they are dedicated and ready to step foot on the court.
