New community service rule

JP DeBarber, Reporter

A new LBHS policy requires the class of 2018 to complete their minimum 40 hours of community service by the beginning of second semester.

“We decided to bump up the due date because so many seniors did not have their hours completed all the way into June and were scrambling to complete them,” said ASB Clerk Sandy Jones. “This caused extra work for counselors and the CS Coordinator in that they spent a lot of time following up with students and parents in trying to get this requirement fulfilled.”

While some seniors have the bulk of their hours before them, others have been actively volunteering throughout their entire high school careers.

I’m a little indifferent when it comes to the new rule. I finished the requirement at the end of freshman year; however, I know how difficult it is to get hours at non-profits and volunteer-run organizations that have 9-5 business hours and are closed on the weekends,” said senior Michael Davidson. “I think it’s only doing students a disservice if they’re limited in finishing a requirement to graduate.”

Although the earlier deadline may not be an ideal for some, there are many ways you can complete community service hours.  See below for just a few opportunities:
