Laguna Beach Unified School District recently celebrated its second annual Legacy Night, an event designed to unite the district’s youngest and oldest students in a symbolic passing of the torch. The tradition is quickly becoming a highlight of the school year, emphasizing community, reflection, and the long journey from kindergarten to senior year.
Legacy Night originated when Dr. Allemann and Mrs. Lundblad discovered a video of another high school hosting a similar event. “We discussed how to make it meaningful to our unique community,” said Lundblad. “Together, we came up with the idea of Legacy Night. We connected with Mrs. Blanton at El Morro, and she loved the idea, so together we made it happen.”
The event is more than just a gathering. Its purpose is to showcase how deeply connected the Laguna Beach community is, while giving seniors a chance to reflect on their journey. “It’s a community building night,” said Lundblad. “Seniors remember what they once were and how far they‘ve come, while also considering the impact they want to leave behind. Their actions shape the future generation.”
Currently, Legacy Night is a joint effort between ASB, senior class leadership, Dr. Allemann, elementary principals, and kindergarten teachers. While still in its early years, the event has already received important feedback. “Students always say that it felt meaningful and special,” Lundlbad noted.
The evening also provides a powerful visual of connection across grade levels. As seniors and kindergartners meet in the middle of the field, families witness the full arc of the K-12 journey. “Seniors reconnect with the people who started them on their journey, kindergarteners meet role models they can picture becoming, and families see the long arc of their impact,” said Lundblad.
Looking forward, it is hoped that Legacy Night will continue to shape LBUSD culture for years to come. “I hope it commences a culture of mentorship and stewardship,” said Lundblad. “Seniors will see themselves as leaders who give back, and younger students will grow up knowing, ‘this is what we do here.’”
Though still new, Legacy Night has already proven to be a powerful reminder that every student’s journey begins with a single step and that each legacy has the potential to inspire the future.
