With the Fall Play “Trap” coming soon, there are many ways students can get involved in the theater program at Laguna Beach High School. From working behind the scenes as a part of the tech crew to playing a main role on stage, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Two talented seniors, both of whom have been a part of theater for almost three years, have given some details about what it’s like to be a part of the program and how people can get involved.
Moises Ramirez has been a part of the theater’s tech group since the spring musical in his sophomore year. With three shows under his belt, he’s given some details about what tech does and how someone could get involved.
Q: What does Tech exactly do for plays at LBHS?
Moises: Tech adds onto the show to make the performance look better. We help with the lighting, sets, props, and design, and we collaborate with the actors to make the show come to life, making it look really good.
Q: What is your role in Tech this year?
Moises: I’m a part of the stage management team and also help with projections.
Q: What do you do as a part of the stage management team?
Moises: I work with the director to make the show come to life. We work together on headsets to call cues throughout the show. When you see lights change on stage or set pieces move on and off. Those movements are cued by the stage management team, so we have to be paying attention for every minute of the show to not miss any cues.
Q: How can people get involved with Tech if they want to join?
Moises: People can join tech through the fliers around campus. They can also talk to the director, Mrs. Minguez-Marshall. It might be too late to join this play, but they can come to check it out later this fall and see if they would want to join the spring musical.
Q: How many volunteer hours do you get for joining Tech?
Moises: You get 40-50 hours per show. It’s a great way to earn community service.
Catherine Jordan has been an actress in the program since her sophomore year when she auditioned for the play “She Kills Monsters.” She has a lot of experience in the program and has some information on how a newcomer can join.
Q: How did you feel during your first audition?
Catherine: It was terrifying, but I was honestly very excited because I got called back for three characters. I had some prior experience since I took a camp before my freshman year, so I asked for some help on my monologue and the leader helped me a little bit. That was my first time doing something for theater.
Q: What was it like auditioning now as a senior?
Catherine: Part of it is sad because I know it’s my last audition, but it was a little stressful. Auditions are always nerve-racking for anyone.
Q: What exactly is the auditioning process?
Catherine: An email is sent out asking if anyone is interested in the play, and you scan a QR code and fill out a Google Form. You can read through the character descriptions, say what time you want to audition, and if you have any conflicts. It’s always good to reach out if you have any questions. You can also pick your own monologue or just ask for one; either way, it has to be under 3 minutes. If anyone is interested in joining the spring musical, more information can be found on our Instagram @lbusdtheatre.
Q: How can people get involved in the fall play?
Catherine: Since auditions are over, I recommend supporting the show by coming and seeing the fall play. You get to see what shows are like and if you want to be part of it for the spring musical. Auditions for the spring musical are the week before Thanksgiving break. I’m always willing to help out anyone if they need any extra help!
The play’s show dates are Thursday, October 24th, Sunday, October 27th, and November 1st through 3rd. Following the theater’s Instagram page will notify you of when tickets are available for purchase. If you are unsure about watching the show, there will be a tutorial preview the week prior to see if you would want to watch the full production. There will also be a demerit-clearing opportunity by attending one of the shows that same weekend. Be sure to purchase tickets as soon as possible, though, as they sell out quickly!
