On November 17th, the Boy’s Soccer season kicked off, with the first matchup against Northwood High School.
With the expectations of having a better season than last year and starting on the right foot, Varsity had a close game with both defenses making great plays in crucial times at the 90th minute. Northwood had an immediate opportunity, but Laguna’s goalkeeper came in clutch to make an incredible open-legged save, ending the game 0-0.
On the other hand, JV managed to score one goal in the first half and held that one-to-nothing score until the half, but Northwood came back to win it four to one against Laguna.
Frosh had a rough start to the season, but Coach Greene expresses his overall view as “a hard-working squad” and that “towards the end of the game, the team got into a rhythm of good touches and passes.” I also asked him about his thoughts on this year’s squad and how it will look: “We take it one day at a time, and we keep improving, one practice after another.” Frosh got outscored six-nil but only allowed one goal the entire second half. My thoughts as the goalkeeper on Frosh were that our team had the right amount of key players who stood out during this game. Our defense was solid, making plays during the match’s second half using their bodies to box out and take the ball away (they saved me during the second half in scary moments). Still, I also believe we need to work on the offensive side of the ball more than the defensive; we didn’t have any offense going on the entire game, which might be why we didn’t score. Overall, I believe the season looks bright for this year’s soccer squads and truly believe Varsity might even make it deep enough to the Playoffs this year with key players making good plays, and the coaching might play a role with the addition of a goalkeeping coach. Frosh might need some improvement with being more aggressive and explosive on offense, and JV has shown that they might be just as good as varsity with a great team all around but needs to focus on keeping the foot on the gas pedal even with a lead. As you know, your first game doesn’t always show how the rest of your season plays out, but I believe this season might be one for the books.
