On October 24, 2023, LHBS’s Interact club hosted the California Coastal Clean-up at Main Beach. This event started at 8 A.M. and continued till noon. Aside from our very own students hosting, we had multiple environmental organizations come to support and provide trash bags for locals. While students and parents cleaned up trash around the beach, you also had the opportunity to talk to your local police and marine departments about ways you can better our environment daily. We had an outstanding turnout and were more than happy to see Laguna Beach doing its part. I am a personal member of the Interact Club board, so my peers and I got the opportunity to set up and greet everyone. This gave Laguna Beach students an opportunity to rack up community service hours. As the clean-up concluded, students had the chance to estimate how much trash they collected, and then their bags were weighed. I was able to ask the president of the club a bit about his experience last Sunday; “Members of the club had the job of running the club and providing community service sheets while participating students got to clean up trash around the coast.” George Muhammad states, “We encourage everyone to pick up any trash they find on the ground… if you don’t like to see a dirty city, make it clean.”
Sean Smith is part of the Interact Club and attended the beach clean-up. “It felt good knowing that we were helping our planet.” We made our way around the coast with a trash bag in hand, making sure to never miss a piece. Sean gives a perfect example of why everyone should be motivated to make our world a better place. “It’s important that everyone contributes to their home, I could say that you make your bed for everyone every morning because it’s part of your home… you should clean up the earth because it’s also part of your home.” If you missed a chance to do community service hours, do not fret. The Interact Club hosts many events monthly. This Sunday come downtown for our very own car show! You will have the opportunity to enter raffles and check out local cars. Be sure to keep your eyes up for future events, and we hope to see you there!
