Coach reminds that character counts

Coach Scott Finn was nominated as an Orange County Coach of Character. The award recognizes coaches who teach character qualities within their respective athletic programs. Coaches from all over Orange County were recognized at the event.
“It is very rewarding to be honored with an award that involves character as well as coaching,” said Finn.
One thing he does to emphasize PRIDE is place great value on his athletes’ developing character. Character does not show up on the scoreboard but is a huge part of what makes a good athlete.
“I’ve always believed in teaching and coaching with the purpose of equipping students with character traits that will last a lifetime,” said Finn.
Finn carries out a variety of roles here at LBHS, including coaching our coed surf team and boys and girls golf teams. He also teaches physical education as well as core academic skills classes.
“I truly enjoy all aspects of my roles here at LBHS. I like the variety of tasks that I face each day,” said Finn.
He and coach Bret Fleming work closely to run our school’s physical education program.
“He is one of my favorite people and one of my favorite coaches. He is a great husband and a great example for people around him,” said Fleming.
Coach Finn has taught in the Laguna Beach Unified School District for 14 years, both at Thurston and at the high school.
“He is a great coach that helps us perform at our best every time we go out,” said sophomore surfer Jake Levine.
Finn draws upon his experiences as a former professional surfer when mentoring his athletes.
“His coaching gave me the skills I needed to improve both as a competitor and free surfer. I will use his advice for many years to come,” said senior surfer Zach Levine.
In addition to leading the surf team, Finn has guided the girls golf team in their 12-0 record in league.
“He manages to make a team of strangers feel like the closest family,” said senior team captain Hailey McCullough regarding Finn’s ability to coach beyond the game’s skill sets.
Finn looks forward to influencing more high schoolers in the future.
“My hope is that students who encounter me in class or on one of our teams will learn that they matter and that the right effort and attitude can lead anyone to great things,” said Finn.
